5 Iconic Moments From 'The Five Heartbeats'

Relive these classic scenes to celebrate the birthday of actor Michael Wright, who played Eddie King Jr.

Happy birthday to Michael Wright! The 68-year-old actor is most widely known as Eddie King (or Kane) Jr. in “The Five Heartbeats.” Wright’s character was arguably the most talented, the group's lead singer, and the most troubled. His character faced drug and alcohol addiction as the group rose to fame, and in one of the most heartfelt redemption stories a movie could offer, King got clean by the end and sang his way back into his group members’ hearts.

“The Five Heartbeats” is one of those classic black films that every Black person has seen multiple times and will still watch like it’s brand new. It is the coming-of-age tale of a young group of talented Black crooners who want to sing their way into fame and success, but along the way, they’re met with liars, thieves, sex, drugs, and the whole shebang.

The Heartbeats were a fictional Motown-inspired singing group featured in the 1991 film. The group consisted of five talented actors who portrayed the members: Robert Townsend as Donald "Duck" Matthews, Leon Robinson as Terrence "Dresser" Williams, Harry Lennix as Eddie "Cadillac" Palmer, Tico Wells as J.T. Matthews, and Wright.

The Heartbeats' story paralleled the real-life rise and fall of iconic groups like The Temptations and The Four Tops. The film follows their journey from their humble beginnings in Chicago to their eventual success on the music scene. Along the way, they faced various challenges, including personal conflicts, drug addiction, and the ever-changing landscape of the music industry.
