The Weeknd Donates $2 Million to Provide 18 Million Loaves of Bread to Gaza Families

The UN's World Food Programme says that aid will help feed 157,000 Palestinian families for a month.

The Weeknd has committed $2 million from his XO Humanitarian Fund to the World Food Programme to aid humanitarian efforts throughout Gaza, reports Billboard.

In a statement issued on Monday (April 29), The Weeknd, who now goes by his real name Abel Tesfaye, provided support that will help toprovide more than 1,500 metric tons of fortified wheat flour, which can be used to make more than 18 million loaves of bread to feed more than 157,000 Palestinians for a month.”

“We are very grateful for Abel’s continued support as WFP works to respond to the urgent hunger crisis in Gaza,” Barron Segar, WFP USA president/CEO said in a statement.

“Hunger is a human-made problem, and as such, it is solvable. We have enough food in this world to feed everyone; all we need is the funding and safe access to make it happen. Thanks to Abel’s designation, families and children will receive the food they so desperately need,” the statement continued.

As the conflict in Gaza continues, Tesfaye has shown his concern for those impacted by the devastation.  In December, the Goodwill Ambassador earmarked $2.5 million from his XO Humanitarian Fund to bolster the WFP's humanitarian efforts in Gaza. His pledge provided approximately 1.8 million pounds of food parcels, capable of sustaining over 173,000 Palestinians for two weeks.

According to the latest statistics, there are currently more than one million displaced Palestinians who are experiencing extreme food shortages as a result of the conflict.

“People cannot meet even the most basic food needs. They have exhausted all coping strategies, like eating animal fodder, begging, selling off their belongings to buy food,” WFP’s Geneva office director said. “They are most of the time destitute and clearly some of them are dying of hunger.”
